English reading and listening links for discussing in online English lessons, featuring articles and videos about playing the lottery, people who give up habits like drinking alcohol for the month of January, and the Irish language.

Questions

  • Do you play the lottery? If so, how often? If not, why not?

(Some people like to say “if you’re not in it, you can’t win it” to justify playing the lottery. Do you like playing the lottery? Moreover, what would you do if you won the lottery (apart from taking lots of online English lessons every day – would you completely give up all types of work?)

  • Have you ever given anything up? Why did you give it up?

(People often try to give up bad habits like drinking, smoking and gambling, but this can be very difficult. It has become quite popular nowadays in Ireland for people to give up alcohol completely in January and November. Furthermore, there are a lot more ads on the radio these days telling people about the bad effects of smoking and drinking too much. Do you have any bad habits that would be particularly hard to give up? Do you think it’s a good idea to just spend one month without something, or are there better strategies for improving your health and financial situation?)

  • Is there more than one common language in your country?

(A lot of English learners often don’t realise that Ireland has its own language. Even people in England are sometimes completely unaware of this. You can see in the article below that English is definitely the main language used in Ireland, and someone got in trouble at work for speaking Irish on the phone to a customer. Is it normal to hear a different language where you’re from? Or have you ever been to a bilingual place and what was it like there?)

Music

Sink like a stone, hear no sound, time stood still
Enter the void, leave no trace where you’ve been
Never thought you’d understand
The years are slipping out of your hand
And all we ever wanted to be
Was floating in the emerald sky
Our skeletons remain under a neon noon
Hands turn to dust, psychic waves fill the air
All what we have is what we’ve done to what we had
Never thought you’d understand
The years are slipping out of your hand
And all we ever wanted to be
Was floating in the emerald sky
Our skeletons remain under a neon noon
Sink like a stone, hear no sound, time stood still
All what we have is what we’ve done to what we had
