In this post, I put together some links to help you with speaking about social problems in English. I’m very interested in this topic and I think it’s a problem that the government here in Ireland does very little about, even though the situation is becoming worse because of how the economy is changing. Unemployment is high in some places while the price of renting or buying a house in the more prosperous regions is ridiculous, and this makes life very difficult for a lot of people. I’ve included some items from news websites and Facebook that discuss these issues, and can help you with speaking about social problems in English. I think it’s something that happens nearly everywhere – I remember that the situation seemed to be even worse when I lived in South Korea – so it can be a good topic to talk to people from other countries about. People can have varied opinions about this topic too as it’s quite complex; I sometimes have disagreements with my friends about it.

Conversation questions for speaking about social problems in English

  • What do you think about social inequality? Do governments need to do more to deal with the situation or should people just roll up their sleeves and try to cope with it?
  • What sort of social problems exist where you live?
  • How are different social groups treated where you live (e.g. women, the disabled, immigrants, unemployed people)?

I’m a man, a man of simple pleasures
I got all I need, so give me whiskey measures
With dyslexic eyes I’m seeing very clearly
By the way, I’m on my way
But all of my life, I’ve been treated like a fool
But I’m no one’s fool
Here I go once again trying hard to pretend
There’s a future in your man made rules
I’ll be governed by the road, get to shed this heavy load
I see no future, so leave me alone in the past
I am told, the world is nearly ending
But when I look outside the birds are always singing
You throw sticks and bones
Remember every dog will have it’s day, I’m on my way
But all of my life, I’ve been treated like a fool
But I’m no one’s fool
Here I go once again trying hard to pretend
There’s a future in your man made rules
I’ll be governed by the road, get to shed this heavy load
I see no future, so leave me alone in the past
Go on, let the righteous guide you home to where you belong
I’ll stay, listen to my favorite tunes, that’s where I belong
You won’t take me for a ride
I’m far too fast for you to keep up with me
You won’t take me for a ride
Never catch them really need no money
(I’m not gonna be standing in the line
Waiting for you just to kick me out)
You won’t take me for a ride, you won’t take me for a ride
You won’t take me for a ride, you won’t take me for a ride
