The Year of the Dog starts today so I put together a video and some links to read and watch about Chinese New Year in English. It’s a huge celebration around Asia and wherever people of East Asian heritage live.

Korean New Year falls on the same day as Chinese New Year, and has some very distinct differences in how it’s celebrated despite there also being some similarities. In terms of similarities, it’s common for everyone to go to their hometown and when I lived in Seoul, it was always really quiet during this holiday because so many people had all left at the same time. It was such a big exodus of people that my friends and I used to joke that it was like the apocalypse.

I’ve also been in China for the New Year, and it’s a much more loud and lively celebration there. Although people also rush away to their hometown at the same time like in Korea, the people who are left in the city love to set off fireworks. They also have big parades there so there are loads of people out on the streets. I was in Shanghai for it and I couldn’t sleep that night because there were fireworks exploding everywhere until the morning. That was despite me drinking a lot of beer which would normally send you to sleep!

Rory Gallagher & Frankie Miller ~ Walkin’ The Dog

Mary Mack dressed in black

Silver buttons all down her back

I know, ‘cause I love her so

She broke her needle now she can’t sew

Walkin’ the dog

Walkin’ the dog

Now if you don’t know how to do it

I’ll show you how to walk the dog

Ask my mama for fifty cents

To see the elephant jump the fence

It jumped so high it hit the sky

Never got back ’til the fourth July

Walkin’ the dog

Walkin’ the dog

Lord, if you don’t know how to do it

I’ll show you how to walk the dog

Mary, Mary quite contrary

How does your garden grow

You got silver bells and little white shells

Pretty maids all in a row

Walkin’ the dog

Walkin’ the dog

Well if you don’t know how to do it

I’ll show you how to walk the dog

(Instrumental)

Ask my mama for fifty cents

To see the elephant jump the fence

It jumped so high it hit the sky

Never got back ’til the fourth July

Walkin’ the dog

Walkin’ the dog

Well if you don’t know how to do it

I’ll show you how to walk the dog
